Wine Growing and the Climate Change

„Possibilities for adaptation and mitigation taking as example the model of the Traisental region” is the central concern of the working group “AG Sustainable Winegrowing Traisental”.
The project objective is to identify, using the Traisental region as example, measures for adaptation in relation to climate change and possible methods for mitigating greenhouse gases in the wine growing business, to:

  1. guard against the negative effects of climate change on wine growing and
  2. reduce CO2 emissions in both the wine growing process and its marketing (packaging, storage, transport/distribution)
  3. make the sustainability of wine growing production methods in Traisental a trademark for local viticulture and a role model for all other wine growing regions!
To achieve this we have won the support of the following partners:
  • Austrian Research Centers GmbH –ARC
  • Universität für Bodenkultur(University for Agriculture /Forestry/Natural resources/Applied Life Sciences)
  • HBLA und BA Klosterneuburg (Higher/Vocational schools/colleges)
  • IK Traisental
  • SERI (Sustainable Europe Research Institute)
  • Weinbauverband Niederösterreich (The Winegrowers Association of Lower Austria)
Data is collated for this project from the vineyards, farms and cellars of all participating wine growers. This includes individual greenhouse gas emissions’ readings from the ground in the vineyards, literature data, weather and yield data as well as interviews with those taking part.
Improvement in sustainability should be attained principally through possible reduction in the use of crop protection products in line with an integrated plant protection programme. The CO2-Footprint-Concept should be adapted to the special requirements in viticulture. The choice of measures is essentially preparatory work for successful implementation of the project.
